CASCADES - sometimes a challenge to get through.
Four,
maybe five routes.
- Starting from the top there is the North Cascades across past Concrete, then working your way into the head of Lake Chelan.
- Next would be Stevens Pass.
- Then Snoqualmie
- There is one more route that doesn't have the "blind man's bluff" corner to negotiate like Snoqualmie and can be tried if you have the gas. Follow the powerline up from the Howard Hanson Resevoir (just east of Crest) to Stampede Pass . Go past a little ghost town called Lester and turn right up a side valley. After about 3 miles turn left at the next valley following the logging roads to Easton. Attached is a diagram.
- If all else fails you are in for the scenic route all the way down to the Columbia River Gorge and across. Beats eating pinecones 'cause you couldn't get turned around at the bottom of a fogged in valley.
- To help you punch through the Cascades, you can look at the mountain pass webcams at Washington State Highway Webcams and the aviation webcams at WSDOT.

Aerobatic Contest Scoring Program -- CIVA "Fairplay" Most advanced contest scoring program in the worldMaybe the IAC executive will show some leadership on this next year and adopt it for IAC contests. It still has the capability to dummy down to raw averages if that's what IAC or the contest manager want, but that would be like switching your entertainment center to "mono" because you don't trust the five-channel surroundsound. Trust the math, most of use can't do a stress analysis of a B747 wing spar, but we ride in the airplane anyway.

Flying between the US and Canada - it's getting more
complicated......
- First of all, here is the whole Private Flyers Guide to Crossing the Border published by the US Customs Border Patrol. If you can't find phone numbers or Airports of Entry, there is a list in the guide.
- Get your US Customs and Border Protection DECAL. You can apply on-line $27.50. It is good for the year - Jan 1 to Dec 31. You can present the receipt if you haven't received the actual decal yet. In a pinch the customs agent at the airport of entry will process the sale of the decal, but they prefer you to apply for it on-line. You can start off by making their life (and believe me yours....) easier.
- Enroll in eAPIS.
- Minimum 1 hour (see below on customs notification - may as well say 2 hours) before departing to the US or from the US you must complete an on-line manifest through eAPIS. Blackberry stumbles past the ID and password page, maybe the browser in an iPhone can handle it. There is a "Departure" form for departing the US, and an "Arrival" form for entering the US, so be sure you fill the right one. You can do both at the same time if you know when you are coming back. Forms asks for your DECAL number, so have it handy if you've already received it. If you don't have it yet the eAPIS form can still be submitted.
- Minimum 2 hours and no more than 24 hours contact the US Customs at the location and number from your US Airport of Entry list. They will ask if you have manifested through eAPIS, so be sure you've done this first. The most common border crossing we use is Bellingham, and their number is 360-734-5463.
- Transponder Code/Flight Plan. Coming or going you need to be on a Flight Plan (Canada FSS 866-992-7433)to cross the border. You will be assigned a specific "border crossing transponder code" by ATC after you take off. You must arrive within 15 minutes of your ETA.
- US Customs will ask you to show: a pilot certificate and radio license, current medical, passport. From your aircraft: C of R, C of A, W&B, proof of insurance. If you do not own the aircraft you need a NOTARIZED letter from the owner authorizing your use.. Don't ask them if they have an FAA badge hiding behind their customs badge.
- Returning to Canada, file your flight plan with the Seattle FSS at 206-767-2726, and call CanPass 888-226-7277 to arrange for Canadian Customs. Canadian Airports of Entry. You have to call them 2 hours before your intended landing time at your Canadian Airport of Entry. Notify eAPIS if you haven't done so already. You have to list an "exit" airport with customs, and that can be the closest one to your last airport in the US. For example, if your last stop in the US is Arlington for fuel, you would enter Renton or Boeing Field as the exit airport, and in the descriptive notes say you are flying out of Arlington. You are also asked where and when you are crossing the border, so give an estimate for that. Once airborne, call your local ATC (FSS) for a border-crossing transponder code, and to open your flight plan.
